Fairtrade, Organic or Locally Produced Food?

Should I buy food and products that support workers in Third World by buying Fairtrade labelled products even though these goods normally travel thousands of miles from Africa, South America or South East Asia? What if these foods were produced with the use of pesticides and additives? It makes sense then to look for and to buy Fairtrade, organic food to both help the producers in the Third World and fulfil my lifestyle choice to eat healthy and additive/pesticide free food. Thankfully, many producers are now wising up to this dilemma by increasingly producing organic and Fairtrade labelled products. I am currently using Fairtrade, organic t-bags at home! Now comes another important question, should I buy Fairly Traded organic sugar …

Cookware & Good Hygiene

Preparing a scrumptious meal for guest is a great accomplishment. Many people neglect one of the most important things and that is cleanliness. There are people who assume that personal hygiene is for cooks who work in restaurant kitchens. Personal hygiene is for everyone that prepares a meal for themselves or someone else. It would be a horror if one could spy on a cook and watch them throughout the course of the day. There hands are full of germs and they haven’t even washed their hands all day. The suddenly, they decide to bake cookies for their guest. Imagine someone with germs clinging to their hands rolling dough for homemade cookies that you eat. This is how many people …

Deep Fat Fryers – Mars Bars?

Deep fat fryers do exactly what their name suggests: anything that you put into them will be deep-fried in the fat you add (usually vegetable or sunflower oil). Most people who have deep fat fryers use them to make chips from cut strips of potato, but you can actually deep fry just about anything: fish, chicken, sausages, parsnips and carrots are all interesting things to try. Meat with skin will generally form a crispy coating when deep-fried, while thinly-sliced vegetables tend to turn into crisps or chips. The deep fat fryer is the key tool in much fast food, especially British fish and chip shops, where the fish, chips and almost everything else they sell has been deep fried – …

Several culinary arts schools offer graduate studies for students. There are the more traditional, classical institutions that cater to students who are employed in luxury hotels, cruise …

Cooking with Children

I am fairly certain that most of us have either seen or at the very least heard of the hit situation comedy “Married with Children” that dominated television for quite a few years and is still shown in syndication in many markets around the world. There is little on this earth that can teach you about yourself and the way your children view you as easily as cooking with your children. Of course, this is the perfect opportunity for many of us to let …

Deep Fryer – Pieces of Wisdom

For a time I worked in a convenience store as a clerk and cook and I used a deep fryer quite a bit for cooking battered chicken and French fried potatoes. Of course the chicken doesn’t start out battered. It comes delivered frozen in big cardboard boxes. Before the chicken is ready for the cooking part it must be prepared and time to thaw out. Each piece of chicken is rinsed in cold water, then put in a vat of tenderising, salty water to soak for several hours in a refrigerated area. It is again rinsed and kept cold, until needed for cooking. When needed for cooking the chicken is breaded in a special spicy flour mix, dipped in spice …
